Arcadia Biosciences' GLA-enriched Safflower Oil Offers Consumers A Practical Way To Benefit From Gamma Linolenic Acid

-- New GLA Enriched Oil Packs Two To Four Times The Amount Of Beneficial Omega-6 Fatty Acid As Other Oils --

London, England (Oct. 30, 2007) - Arcadia Biosciences is developing GLA-enriched safflower oil, which will be commercially available in late 2008. The oil contains unprecedented levels of an omega-6 fatty acid called gamma linolenic acid (GLA). The company is featuring the product at The Food Ingredients Europe tradeshow in London, England Oct. 30 – Nov. 1.

Studies show that regular usage of GLA can have significant anti-inflammatory effects and may help alleviate symptoms commonly associated with diabetes, eczema, inflammation, premenstrual syndrome and other ailments. Arcadia's GLA safflower oil has a higher concentration of GLA than other oils that contain the beneficial omega-6 fatty acid, making attaining the benefits of GLA more practical for consumers.

Arcadia's GLA-enriched safflower oil packs two to four times as much GLA as borage or evening primrose oils, the two main sources of dietary GLA today. One would need to take 4 capsules of evening primrose oil or two borage oil capsules to obtain the same benefits found in just one GLA safflower capsule.

The high concentration of GLA in Arcadia's safflower oil and ease of cultivating safflower means greater cost savings and higher quality products for companies that produce dietary supplements, nutraceuticals and functional foods. For example, meal replacement or nutrition bars can pack more beneficial GLA without the excess oil and calories.

"Gamma linoleic acid has important health benefits, but require consumers to consume a lot of borage or evening primrose oil to gain those benefits," said Eric Rey, president and CEO of Arcadia. "By concentrating that same amount of GLA in one safflower capsule, we hope to extend the dietary and nutritional benefits of GLA to more consumers."
