China Ministry of Agriculture, Bureau of Seed Management Delegation Visits Arcadia Biosciences

DAVIS, Calif. (JANUARY 24, 2013) – Arcadia Biosciences, Inc., an agricultural company focused on developing technologies and products that benefit the environment and human health, recently welcomed an 18-member delegation of agronomists and researchers organized by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture’s Bureau of Seed Management. The purpose of the delegation’s visit was to be briefed on Arcadia’s environmentally beneficial agricultural technologies and exchange information on seed industry research, regulation, and commercialization. Delegation members toured Arcadia’s laboratory facilities and met with senior executives to learn about Arcadia’s advanced breeding techniques and agronomic technology portfolio, including the company’s Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE), Water Efficiency (WE), and Salt Tolerance technologies.
“We are actively engaged in efforts to help Chinese growers meet the productivity demands of an expanding middle class, while mitigating the environmental challenges of a rapidly industrialized, urban economy,” said Eric Rey, president and CEO of Arcadia. “Socioeconomic trends in China continue to challenge the country’s food security and are expected to significantly increase the environmental footprint of agriculture, and our technologies can be a key factor in reducing those impacts,” he said.
Arcadia’s Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) technology, which enables farmers to achieve high yields using less nitrogen fertilizer, is the subject of more than 50 issued and pending patents, including multiple patents awarded in China in the past year. The company has demonstrated the efficacy of its NUE technology in field trials of numerous crops, including primary grain crops, such as rice and wheat.
In addition, Arcadia has collaborated with the Ningxia Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences (NAAFS) in China to develop a carbon credit methodology that allows farmers to claim carbon credits from reduced fertilizer use in conjunction with Arcadia’s NUE technology. NAAFS carried out extensive field trials with conventional crops, including rice, wheat, maize, soybean and canola, to develop baseline GHG emissions data that were critical to the new methodology. The methodology was recently approved by the Clean Development Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
